2010 release, an interesting look back at the Madlib Medicine Show and a prelude of what is to come in the 12th, 13th and maybe 9th releases in the series. All of the regular Madlib collaborators MED, Guilty Simpson, Strong Arm Steady are represented here with exclusive tracks. Karriem Riggins pops in for a Supreme Team interlude, as does A.G. Madlib digs out a Jaylib-era track that was earmarked for the never-realized second album and, of course, interludes, outerludes and probably queludes abound. The Madlib Medicine Show series is a combination of Madlib's new hip-hop productions, remixes, beat tapes, and jazz, as well as mixtapes of funk, soul, Brazilian, psych, jazz and other undefined forms of music from the Beat Konducta's 4-ton stack of vinyl.

2009 release. When Madlib followed J Dilla's now-classic Donuts with an instrumental concept-album of his own, a series was born. Beat Konducta, the alias he often scribbled on the beat CDs he handed to friends and potential collaborators, left the realm of the unknown and entered the record-buying public's conscious as Madlib's latest nom de plume. Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: Dil Cosby & Dil Withers is a 42-track tribute to the late J Dilla. Madlib and J. Rocc lovingly remember their friend and reflect on his boundless influence. As was the case with Donuts and in keeping with the Beat Konducta's all-embracing musical bent, this album does not settle into one groove for too long. The result is a transfixing, sometimes jarring, and always soulful homage to the man Madlib crowned King Of The Beats.

Madlib Medicine Show No. 10 reminds us of the mastery Madlib has performed throughout his heralded body of work, sourcing inspiration by the likes of Don Blackman, ZZ Hill or the Sylvers and blowing you away with the original work that stems from it. Following up his successful Beat Konducta vinyl-only releases, Madlib rounds out his first CD collection of hip hop instrumentals with Beat Konducta Vol 1-2: Movie Scenes. These new, original tracks have been culled from the now-legendary beat CDs which provided the basis for Madlib's 2004-2005 productions from Madvillain, Quasimoto and Jaylib. Movie Scenes presents a vivid hip hop soundtrack for each mood in the model of vintage "library records" made for tv and film background music in the funky 1960s & 70s. Each of the 40 tracks has a title as well as a parenthetical mood or theme to correspond with what's unfolding on the screen. 2010 release. The Medicine Show series continues with a special 420 release, 420 Chalice All Stars. Madlib doesn't limit himself to one style in this overflowing platter: all Jamaican flavors are evident, from the speedy Ska of the mid '60s to the dark Dub of the early '70s to rollicking Funk from some of Jamaica's best.

Madlib follows High Jazz with the eighth installment in his Madlib Medicine Show, a mix of the multiple facets of jazz music: Advanced Jazz. Madlib s been busy this year. And while his recorded output always spans the gamut, he often returns to recurrent themes, spread across the genres that serve as home base or bases, as it were. Jazz is one such base. High Jazz, the previously released Madlib Medicine Show album, showed a marked development in Madlib s craft: every element of jazz was encapsulated in that eighty-minute opus. What better way to follow such an album than with a companion-piece culled from the thousands of jazz albums that inspired Madlib s first forays into the genre? The resulting mix, Advanced Jazz, is, as the title hints, a step (or three!) deeper than the Steve Kuhn and Weldon Irvine albums that he first enjoyed as he was first delving into his Yesterdays New Quintet project Angles Without Edges in 2001. Some of this music to the untrained ear might not seem to be jazz at all. But rest assured this is a jazz mix through and through, as exhilarating a ride as Madlib s Brain Wreck Show and Flight To Brazil. It s a celebration of this great American music and while it focuses on the past forty years, it clearly heralds every innovation both domestic and international - of this century-old musical form.
