On November 8, 2011, Indirecto Records releases MSMW LIVE: In Case the World Changes Its Mind, a double-live album featuring guitar guru John Scofield and genre busting improvisational jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood.
Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood first recorded together on Scofield's A Go Go (Verve 1998), a project that united the group on material composed by Scofield and interpreted by all four musicians.
In 2006, MSMW collaborated again on OUT LOUDER (Indirecto Records), a jam-packed release full of irresistible grooves and spontaneous improvisation. OUT LOUDER was a genuine four-way collaboration between Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood. "A Go Go was John's record and we were essentially sidemen, where OUT LOUDER musically comes from all of us," explains Wood. Scofield adds that much of the material was composed when the foursome "would play free stuff, listen back, make a song out of it, and then go back with that idea in mind and play free again."
OUT LOUDER exhibits a raw and edgy sound that is embedded in the foundations of jazz, funk and blues. It is described as "funky, brash and sometimes downright beautiful," by All About Jazz and Down Beat notes "the disc serves as a jamming fun time of dance-friendly excursions, sonically pleasing FX'd textures and the requisite unpredictable swerves and swoops that MMW typically delivers."
They may attract Sufi-dancing Deadheads to their rock-club shows and they may have connections to lower Manhattan's art-music scene, but when you get right down to it, Medeski Martin & Wood are just a jazz organ trio. Organist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood don't work a whole lot differently from the old Jimmy Smith Trio; they get a good groove going, add a catchy hook and then improvise changes on both the rhythm and the melody. They may take more liberties than Smith ever has, but that familiar combination of a thick organ sound and funky drum patterns is still the core. The third Medeski Martin & Wood album, Friday Afternoon in the Universe, is the best reflection yet of the trio's live show, for 13 of the 15 tracks feature no guests, just the interaction among the three principals. And that interaction has been honed by three years of extensive roadwork into a genuine give-and-take. There's no parade of disconnected solos here, no fast, flashy playing for its own sake; the three players move as one through impressionistic, atmospheric patches into driving funk grooves and then off onto spacey tangents. Medeski plays some piano and synthesizer, but everything he plays has the thickened textures associated with a B-3 organ--thick enough to make three pieces more than sufficient. --Geoffrey Himes

Album Summary
2009 release from the seemingly unclassifiable trio, the third and final installment in their Radiolarians trilogy. Highlights include the passionate and gritty traditional 'Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down,' the anthemic 'Undone,' and the Latin-influenced acoustic opener 'Chantes Des Femmes.' Overall, Radiolarians III finds the trio doing what they do best - melding genres and improvising. What results, is maybe the strongest and most cohesive album of the entire Radiolarian's series.

Album Summary
A year ago, Medeski Martin & Wood set off on the innovative experiment known as The Radiolarians Series. The Radiolarians Series was designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write>record>tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, convened for brief writing retreats, performed only that new material on tour, and then recorded the music immediately after getting off the road.
Indirecto Records is now releasing this material as a trio of records entitled Radiolarians I, II, and III. To date, the band has completed 3 tours with dates stretching across the United States, South America, and Japan. The influences of these locations have found their way into MMW's writing and are being expressed through the music found on the Radiolarians Series. In September, Indirecto released Radiolarians I. This April 2009, Indirecto will release the second installment of the series, Radiolarians II. The Radiolarians Series, designed to challenge the traditional format of touring after a record¹s release, has found Medeski Martin & Wood thriving and making some of their most creative and innovative music in years.
