In music business, determination is key By Liz Welter Marshfield News-Herald When life gives Milinda Baird a lemon, she makes enough lemonade to supply a grocery store.
An aspiring performer, the 27-year-old Arpin mother of four young children has a spirit that doesn't quit.
"Music is a tough business. There's a lot of talent," said Baird as she described her latest foray to make a break for herself as a country/soft rock singer.
Auditioning in Chicago for the USA network National Star show, Baird joined hundreds of other hopefuls looking to win one of 12 spots. The show is holding 13 auditions across the United States.
"There were so many people. The line went around the block. People of every age, shape and ability were there," Baird explained.
Explaining that people auditioned in groups of 10, Milinda said, "You said your name and then sang for 30 seconds. If they liked that, you were called back.
"I didn't make the call-back and there were a number of people who were really good and didn't get a call back either."
Describing a man with a wonderful voice, who navigated the stage with a cane because he is blind, Milinda said it was hard to understand what the judges were looking for in a contestant.
"The blind man didn't get a call back either. That was sad. You really feel sorry for some people because standing in line waiting we all talked about what we do and how hard of a business this is," she said.
Driving to Chicago with Baird was one of her long-time friends, Rachael Eckes, of Auburndale.
"This was just fun to do together. Driving around Chicago was fun," Milinda said.
The women have been friends since they met each other through mutual friends while they were pregnant for the first time.
"I've been impressed with Mindy's music since the first time I heard her sing," said Eckes. "We were driving somewhere and she just started singing. Wow, I told her how beautiful it was and she just laughed."
Encouraging Baird to pursue her musical dream of performing, Eckes said, her voice combined with her original lyrics reminds her of a combination of Shakira and Wynonna Judd.
"Mindy's got a Shakira/Wynonna twist that is unique and just beautiful. It's hard to label," Eckes said.
Looking for another opportunity, Baird said that she's considering putting together a band.
"I take everything as another learning opportunity, another chance to be heard. I'll keep at it. It's my dream, so some day. But for now, my kids need me," she said.
