Album Summary
Stunningly repackaged, remastered, and featuring new liner notes by leading jazz writers, the Warner Jazz Masters Series includes best sellers as well as rare, sought-after gems. On this highly influential 1959 album, Ornette Coleman's unique writing style and solo language forever changed the jazz landscape. On classics such as "Lonely Woman," "Congeniality," and "Focus on Sanity," Coleman used the tunes' moods and melodic contours, rather than their chords, as a basis for his improvisations. This is truly an essential jazz recording, marking the end of one era, providing the blueprint for the next.
Import-only release containing a previously unreleased live performance by the original Ornette Coleman quartet, in a reunion concert that took place in Hamburg, Germany, in 1987. The performance was taped nearly 30 years after the quartet's first album, the wonderful The Shape Of Jazz to Come. Among the many highlights here are revised versions of 'Lonely Woman', from that album, and 'The Sphinx', from Ornette's first album, Something Else!, as well as various tunes from the quartet's reunion studio album, In All Languages, which was recorded during the same year this concert was taped.
