Local Musicians Sing for Worldwide Biodiversity
Local artists Prymal Rhythm, Pat Carr and Michael Stone will be joined by
Texas band The Moondogs to launch the first ever "SongPlanet Saves the
Planet" showcase in Loveland in early January. Event organizer, Matt
"Zjhok" Unger is a DJ on SongPlanet Radio, the on-air branch of Indie music
website SongPlanet.com, and a member of Prymal Rhythm.
"When I saw how many of the artists on SongPlanet were concerned about the
environment, I knew there must be some way to bring the music and
conservation together," says Unger. In 2002, Unger traveled to Costa Rica
with Idea Wild, a Fort Collins-based conservation organization. "I was so
impressed with the work that was being done, and how Idea Wild was making
it happen, when this opportunity came up, I jumped at it."
Proceeds of the January event will go to support Idea Wild projects,
supplying equipment and materials to scientific and educational programs in
developing countries around the world. Founder Wally Van Sickle and his
wife Joni started Idea Wild in 1991 as a way to support conservationists who
couldn't afford research tools. "Providing these people with equipment is
the least we can do. They just don't have any money for the equipment.
Sometimes, it's amazing how simple the tools are that they need," says Van
Sickle. Since its humble beginnings in the Van Sickle's spare bedroom,
Idea Wild has now sponsored more than 1500 projects in 45 countries.
Recipients often share equipment with at least three other conservation
projects. Consequently, the actual number of people using equipment and
supplies provided by Idea Wild is well over 4500.
Unger adds, "It truly warms my spirit to see Idea Wild and SongPlanet.com
coming together, in a combined effort to help our Mother Earth. With the
power of music from Songplanet.com and the equipment that Idea Wild gets to
the biologists in the field, we can't lose!"
