A number of the songs were written and first sung during the years of "the troubles" in Northern Ireland. They are songs of encouragement and hope in times of great sorrow and pain for many people. Many people say that the songs speak to them in a very deep way because they touch on difficult life experiences which they have gone through. They are like a light shining in the darkness, like water in the wilderness.
