History
Formation and lineup changes (2005& ndash;2009)
Periphery was formed by guitarist Misha Mansoor in 2005 who slowly gained a reputation on the internet, primarily via a regularly updated Soundclick account, Meshuggah and John Petrucci forums, and the sevenstring.org message boards. Before and during Periphery's tenure in the metal scene, Mansoor developed a reputation for doing his own audio production, the majority of which was performed with a home computer and a Pod (amp modeler)|Pod XT during this period. Mansoor has continued to update his personal project, Bulb, which preceded Periphery, often transferring songs between the two projects. Mansoor continues to be involved in a number of other musical projects, including Haunted Shores, cite web|url= http://www.guitarmessenger.com/news/haunted-shores-releases-passenger-announce-partial-lineup-of-vocalists/ |title=Guitar Messenger – HAUNTED SHORES Releases ‘Passenger’ and ‘My The Man’, Announce Partial Lineup Of Vocalists (UPDATED) |publisher=Guitarmessenger.com |date= |accessdate=2011-10-29, Four Seconds Ago cite web|url= http://www.myspace.com/foursecondsago |title=Four Seconds Ago Myspace Page, and Of Man Not of Machine.cite web|url= http://got-djent.com/article/man-not-machine-new-track-metal-gear |title=Of Man Not Of Machine: new track 'Metal Gear' (updated) |publisher=got-djent.com |date= |accessdate=2011-10-29
Periphery went through a number of lineup changes in its early history. Originally, Misha played drums in the band for live performances, but switched to guitar when Travis Orbin was recruited. The band also originally only had 2 guitar players (Misha and Alex), Jake Bowen being hired in 2007 as they felt that they did not have enough live members to be able to accurately replicate their songs.Citation needed|date=March 2012 Between 2005 and 2009, Periphery worked with vocalists Jake Veredika, cite web|url= http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx? mode=Article& newsitemID=96765 |title=DIVINE HERESY: First Footage With New Touring Singer Available |publisher=Roadrunnerrecords.com |date= |accessdate=2011-10-29 Casey Sabolcite web|url= http://www.guitarmessenger.com/interviews/misha-mansoor-interview-periphery/ |title=Guitar Messenger – Misha Mansoor Interview (Periphery) |publisher=Guitarmessenger.com |date= |accessdate=2011-10-29 and Chris Barretto, cite web|author=Monday, March 1st, 2010 at 3:30pm by Vince Neilstein |url= http://www.metalsucks.net/2010/03/01/new-periphery-singer-sounds-like-the-old-periphery-singer-who-sounds-like-the-current-haunted-shores-singer-who-sounds-like/ |title=New Periphery Singer Sounds Like The Old Periphery Singer Who Sounds Like The Current Haunted Shores Singer Who Sounds Like… |publisher=MetalSucks |date=2010-03-01 |accessdate=2011-10-29 gradually moving from a Meshuggah -influenced sound to a more ambient, melodic sound, with a focus on innovative production.

Jake Bowen also fell, breaking one of his fingers, in the first week of the UK tour and was unable to play for the rest of their headlining tour. He recovered and joined the band during the last couple of shows on their tour with Fair to Midland and Scale the Summit right before they dropped out of the tour.

Periphery then entered the studio to work on their next two full-length releases. The band stated via their Facebook page that they would be releasing two full length albums. They would contain a mixture of reworked "Bulb" demos as well as completely new material written by the full band (in contrast to their debut album, where Misha had most of the creative input). http://espyrock.com/interviews/sonisphere-uk-2011-interview-periphery-jake-bowen The upcoming releases would also be the first to feature more prominent backing vocals from bassist Tom Murphy as well as the use of string arrangements and orchestral elements. The album would be produced by Misha and Adam "Nolly" Getgood (of British progressive metal band Red Seas Fire) and would be engineered and mixed by Taylor Larson ( Sky Eats Airplane , Of Legends, Life on Repeat).cite web|url= http://www.formspring.me/iambulb/q/204374739836236346 |title=so you, taylor larson and nolly are producing the next album? & #124; Formspring |publisher=Formspring.me |date= |accessdate=2011-10-29The first of the two which will be entitled "Juggernaut" will be a concept album , and is planned to be released around May 2012. The title of the second album has yet to be revealed, but unlike the first release, it will not follow a conceptual theme.
On July 6, 2011, Periphery announced via a MySpace blog post that the band had parted ways with guitarist Alex Bois. However, they will not be changing touring schedules, stating that they are hiring Mark Holcomb and Adam "Nolly" Getgood, to play Alex's parts during live shows until they can find a permanent replacement.cite web|author=Vince Neilstein |url= http://www.metalsucks.net/2011/07/06/periphery-lose-guitarist-alex-bois/ |title=Periphery Lose Guitarist Alex Bois |publisher=MetalSucks |date=2011-07-06 |accessdate=2011-11-17

In July 2011, Mansoor elaborated on the forthcoming albums in Australian magazine Mixdown . He confirmed that there would be two albums recorded, and that one would be a concept album. Mansoor has had interest in a concept album for quite some time, stating that "he wanted to to get this concept album out there. It's been an idea for years and years." Mansoor also revealed that the band would release the albums separately, saying "they'll probably do a staggered release, three to six months apart" and that "he really wants them to be these separate bodies of work, because they will sound different, and be completely different approaches, too."cite web|url= http://www.mixdownmag.com.au/flipbook/index.php? issue=207& mag=Mixdown |title=Mixdown 207 |publisher=Mixdownmag.com.au |date= |accessdate=2011-11-17

On November 16, 2011, bassist Tom Murphy decided to leave the band. The band released this official statement:
We have some sad news to announce, unfortunately Tom Murphy has decided to leave the band:
"I'm sorry to announce that as of today I will no longer be playing bass for Periphery. I have had so many unforgettable experiences and have met so many wonderful people while playing with the band and just want to say thank you to all the fans for making that possible. I am leaving to pursue something new. If you are interested following up with me, feel free to add my personal page at facebook.com/tom.h.murphy." -Tom
We're very saddened by this but wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Fortunately this will not affect our upcoming touring plans as Nolly Getgood from Red Seas Fire will be filling in on bass and Mark Holcomb will take up his position as full-time guitarist.cite web|url= http://www.metalinjection.net/latest-news/breakups/periphery-bassist-is-over-it |title=PERIPHERY Bassist Is Over It - Metal Injection |publisher=www.metalinjection.net |date=2011-11-16 |accessdate=2011-11-20
Nolly currently remains a touring member of Periphery, as no permanent replacement for Tom has yet been announced. Nolly also has no plans to leave his current group Red Seas Fire, which also suggests that his role in Periphery is only temporary.Citation needed|date=March 2012 Nolly's temporary position was confirmed when the band hired Mark Holcomb's brother Jeff to play bass on their 2012 US tour with Protest The Hero , Jeff Loomis, The Safety Fire and Today I Caught the Plague . On February 21, 2012 the band released a single on iTunes entitled "Passenger". This is a partially re-recorded version of the Haunted Shores song of the same name.Citation needed|date=March 2012The release date of the new album was revealed in an advertisement in the May/June 2012 edition of Revolver Magazine. It is to be released on July 3rd. In addition, the new album features guest solos by John Petrucci , Guthrie Govan , and Wes Hauch, guitarist for The Faceless http://www.ryansrockshow.com/php2/news/10946-periphery-tap-guthrie-govan-a-the-faceless-guitarist-to-guest-on-new-album.html.
Equipment
Guitars and Amplification
In an interview with Mixdown magazine, Misha Mansoor discussed the band's live sound; "I think the tone quest ended for us with the Axe-FX. We now go direct. We don't use amps any more, we don't use cabs, we don't use pedals. We just have an Axe-FX and a Fractal MFC foot controller...and we just go directly into the board with that," says Mansoor. In terms of guitars, Mansoor uses a variety, despite having a number of endorsements. Mansoor plays Bernie Rico Jr, http://www.mayones.com/ Mayones guitars, Blackmachine, http://strandbergguitars.com/misha-mansoor-feature-1110/ Strandberg, Jackson, Ernie Ball, Ibanez, Decibel and Daemoness guitars.. Jake Bowen endorses Ibanez guitars and DiMarzio pickups, both of which he uses exclusively, although in the past he used a Caparison Applehorn with a Bare Knuckle War Pig in the bridge position for some songs. Mark Holcomb is endorsed by MusicMan guitars and has been seen using a Caparison Angelus, an Ibanez RG1527 and a Carvin HF2 Fatboy in the past.Citation needed|date=March 2012
Tunings
The band use 6, 7, and more recently 8 string guitars. Generally their 6 string material is written in Drop C tuning and their 7 string material in Drop Ab, with the (as yet unreleased) 8 string material being in low F# tuning (F#BEADGBE, standard 8 string tuning). They do occasionally deviate from these tunings; "Totla Mad", "Frak the Gods" and "Zyglrox" are in variations of Drop C (BbGCFAD and AGCFAD). "Racecar" utilizes a very unusual tuning, as it is in a dropped tuning where the 6th string is dropped on a 7 string guitar instead of the 7th (BbDbAbDbGbBbEb). http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=tKQiK6_xf08
