Reveille debut's album « Time and Death » is a collection of grungy, in-your-face indie rock songs that could be the missing link between François Virot s solo ventures in coarse folk music and the frenzied pop noise of Clara Clara. Still, in place of the sophisticated pyrotechnics of the latter, we re dealing with a simpler, more down to earth affair here almost a classic affair. Of course, what is classic to Lisa and François won t be classic for everyone one, but Reveille really is looser, almost laidback band (hear Commercial Drugs ), even if still concerned with memorable melodies ("Time and Death" the eponymous song, sung by Lisa, or "I'm Yours", admittedly stolen to Billie Holiday), fits of rage ( Mirrors ) and euphoric finales ( Gamblers ). One will maybe be reminded of Nirvana, maybe of the Pixies and a few other hot shots of the 90s, but what you ll really hear here is that Virot s Touch that has come to infect all his musical projects in a more and more prominent way: super solid melodies, unabashed songwriting, super resourceful arrangements, tortuous gimmicks, youthful and intense performances.. Reveille is genuine Virot, not exactly alike the one that we ve come to love through his other projects yet completely the same. For once, his guitars are not perfectly tuned, Lisa s feverish and succinct drum playing isn t pitch perfect at every drum roll, and the songs often saturate, sizzle and go astray... But who cares, in the end, when so much energy, talent and generosity is being displayed? Played and written with love by a duet that is also a couple, Time and Death bursts with joie de vivre, and nothing else matters.
