Album Summary
UK vinyl LP pressing. 2010 release from the veteran British Folk/Rock singer/songwriter. Penned during a short and inspired burst of creative outpouring, the songs were performed during a West Coast tour in February of this year, and the bulk of the performances that made the album come from three shows at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. "I don't think musicians playing on their own are particularly interesting, it's only when they play in front of an audience that something interesting happens," Thompson said in an interview at one of the shows. The musicians appearing on the album with Thompson are Pete Zorn (guitars, flute, sax, mandolin), Michael Jerome (drums), Taras Prodaniuk (bass), and Joel Zifkin (violin, mandolin).

Album Summary
Richard Thompson has been a vital figure in English music for over 40 years. A founder-member of Fairport Convention, he made several acclaimed albums with his wife Linda and then moved into a highly successful solo career.
Thompson's first solo album was Henry The Human Fly in 1972. He then made several albums with Linda Thompson and it wasn't until 1981 that his next solo album, Strict Tempo, was released, on his own Elixir label.
This is an instrumental album, on which Thompson plays everything apart from drums, which are handled by ex-Fairport drummer, Dave Mattacks. Material is mainly traditional jigs and reels, with an original Thompson song and a Duke Ellington cover.
This reissue features new notes on each song by Thompson. Initial orders will come in a special limited-edition card sleeve, with the packaging then reverting to a more traditional jewel case.
The Definitive Career-Spanning Collection in a Deluxe 4-CD Set.
The new 4-CD set Walking On A Wire: 1968-2009 covers every phase of Richard Thompson's career, beginning with the trail-blazing folk-rock group Fairport Convention, to his duo albums with then-wife Linda Thompson, as well as his 20-plus years as a critically acclaimed solo artist. The songs chosen for this selection of his box set were carefully assembled and cover a wide range of styles -- rock 'n' roll with folk, jazz, rockabilly and the odd waltz and soundtrack theme thrown in -- the scope of his songwriting, and the sheer virtuosity of his playing. Compiled by Richard Thompson himself, Walking On A Wire includes material from every album he has released. Named one of the Top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone, the British folk-rock legend is one of the world's most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. Thompson's songs have been covered by R.E.M., Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, and many others.
Eric Clapton had better marketing. That's the only way to explain why Richard Thompson isn't as famous as that other British guitar god. A brilliant, albeit subtle, guitar genius, Thompson writes wonderful songs that are sometimes rockin', sometimes haunting, and sometimes a little bit of both. And he presents them all in a voice that can only be called unique. Unlike most guitar heroes, Thompson is less based in the blues than he is in folk--dating back to his early years with the seminal Fairport Convention--but his has always been a folk music with bite and soul, adding things to the folk lexicon like rockabilly and zydeco. "Cooksferry Queen"--one of the 19 tracks on this compilation culled from the six albums Thompson released on Capitol between 1988 and 1999--features a guitar solo that's downright punk. Tracks like the semihit "I Feel So Good," "Razor Dance," and "Bathsheba Smiles" remain as exhilarating as anything you're apt to hear. Longtime fans will need to hear the three tracks previously unreleased on CD, including a new duet with son Teddy Thompson on "Persuasion" (co-written with Tim Finn) that is absolutely gorgeous. Ultimately, one longs for a box set that encompasses all eras (and labels) of this master's career, but Action Packed proves that the recent last third of it has been topnotch. --Bill Holdship

Album Summary
Literate rocker Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is a return to his classic electric sound, his first plugged-in album since 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Filled with 14 songs of stories of loss and betrayal, the album also contains one of Thompson's most overtly political songs to date, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," told from the perspective of a nervous young soldier stationed in Baghdad (abbreviated as "Dad" in the song). Richard Thompson is a consummate singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career stretches back to the late '60s, when he was a founding member of the British folk-rock Fairport Convention. In the late '70s, with his then-wife, Linda, he recorded Shoot Out the Lights, which regularly makes critics' lists of the best records of all time. In the '90s, he experienced another career renaissance with the album Rumor & Sigh and he remains an elder-statesman of alternative rock.
