Album Summary
Import. CD includes booklet. Ronald "Ronnie" Hawkins is a pioneering rock and roll musician and cousin to fellow rockabilly pioneer Dale Hawkins. Known as "Rompin' Ronnie" Hawkins or "The Hawk," he was a key player in the 1960's Rock scene in Toronto and for the next 40 years, performed all over North America, recording more than twenty-five albums. His best-known hits are 'Hey Bo Diddley'. 'Forty Days' and 'Mary Lou' (a major hit in 1959 about the song narrator's experiences with a gold digging woman). Ronnie was a members of the Hawks which except for Levon Helm, were replaced with talented Canadians: Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson. This was the line-up that was to later become The Band. In the 1970's Ronnie discovered guitarist Pat Travers in Ontario and recruited Travers for his band. Bear Family Records, Germany. 2008.
Import-only two-fer from the under-rated Rock 'n' Roll genius. A consummate performer, he made the leap from high-powered Rockabilly, to Folk, to heartfelt Country just as he relocated from deep in the heart of Arkansas to the bitterly cold streets of Toronto. This quintessential release compiles his two best albums: Ronnie Hawkins (1959) and Mr. Dynamo (1960). Both Rock 'n' Roll gems contain the cream of the crop from Hawkins' hit-making stretch for the Roulette label during his early years. In addition, we have included five bonus tracks from the same period. These splendid recordings feature a virtual who's who of great musicians including Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Jimmy Ray Paulman, Sam Taylor and Floyd Cramer, among others. Hoo Doo Records.
Ronnie's 1959 Roulette debut, Ronnie Hawkins , includes his two biggest U.S. hits: the driving rocker Forty Days and his unforgettable Top 30 version of Mary Lou . That highly collectible album is coupled with his 1960 folk foray, The Folk Ballads of Ronnie Hawkins , featuring gorgeous renditions of Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child; John Henry; A Poor Wayfaring Stranger , and more. 24 tracks.
