Robert Summers Potterton III (b. 1986) has been an active musician for over a decade. His music has been heard in the concert hall, theater productions, television, radio, and independent film, with clients coming from around the world. Best known for his original symphonic music and keyboard improvisations, he also has considerable experience as an orchestrator, contemporary arranger and songwriter, conductor, and music educator. After years of playing by ear, he received his first formal instruction in piano at age 11, followed by organ study with Dr. Richard Mueller for two years. He performed his first church service on July 30, 2000, and afterwards began actively taking on other positions, including serving as pianist and worship team leader for The King’s School in Bolton, assistant organist (and later director of music) at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Coventry, Connecticut, organist (and later director of music) at Hope Lutheran Church in Storrs, organist at First Congregational Church in Windham, guest organist at Zion Lutheran Church in Manchester, guest organist at Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Willimantic, and organist at United Methodist Church in Bolton.
During his four years in college, he served as organist at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Allen, NY, and also performed frequently for chapel services, recitals, and evening Lenten services for the Houghton Theological Society. In recognition of his activity as a musical entrepreneur, he was awarded the Robert MacKenzie Scholarship two years in a row, followed by the Charles Finney Organ Scholarship his senior year. From 2006-2007, he was music program coordinator at The King’s School, from which he graduated in 2004. In 2008, he graduated from the Greatbatch School of Music at Houghton College with the Bachelor of Music degree, with honors, in Composition and Organ Performance.
Robert is currently studying on full scholarship in the Master of Sacred Music program at Boston University School of Theology, where his teachers include Andrew Shenton, Carol Doran, and Peter Sykes. In addition to his position as Minister of Music & Organist at Saint Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dedham, Massachusetts, he continues to serve as Dean of the Northeastern Connecticut Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and as a member of the worship commission for the New England District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. He resides with his wife, Carissa, in Brockton. In May 2010, he will be taking the AGO Colleague Examination, and he plans to continue his studies toward the doctorate in sacred music.
