Interview with Craig Price of SADNESS KILLS THE SUPERMAN

Published on 4/8/2004
By Artistopia
Q. At what age did you realize you wanted to become a music artist and why?

Probably when I was about 9 or 10 when I first saw Angus Young on the tv.I was totally blown away by ACDC up until that point I was like every other little kid in the 80’s listening to Duran Duran!J

Q. Most music artists have that special someone or thing that influenced their decision to do music. Did anyone or something in your life play a major role in influencing you to go into the music business?

Again I’d probably have to blame ACDC!I got into them first then Iron Maiden,Whitesnake,Megadeth,Metallica etc. From a guitarist’s point of view it was players such as Dave Mustaine,John Sykes,Joe Satriani,Gary Moore,Brian Robertson,Jimmy Page and Zakk Wylde that have formed the way I play today.

Q. In terms of the music, which major artist(s) influenced your style and why?

As a player see above. In term of songwriting bands such as Alice In Chains,Stone Temple Pilots,Led Zeppelin because I just love the fact that all these bands could do any style of music and still make it their own.Plus you’ve got 3 of the most amazing singers to ever grace rock music there.

Q. With so many independent artists trying to make it, what makes you stand out from the competition?

We are a British band that can PLAY their instruments like all the classic rock bands used to.You won’t find any 3 chord punk songs in our reportoireJPlus we’re such good looking b$%tards that we deserve a chance!

Q. Music industry professionals are quick to say that being an artist means to gracefully fit a marketable niche in the industry. If you were offered an opportunity that asked you to be something you are not, would you do it to get your foot in the door?

I can’t answer that for the other lads in the band but I’ve been in love with music for so long now and if I don’t get one chance of doing this for a living I think it would destroy who I am.So in response to the question I personally would do anything for a bite of the cherryJ

Q. Making music is one thing, selling it is another. What types of strategies do you use in promoting your artistic work and getting it heard by the proper professionals?

We have a new look website up and running that will soon feature new tracks and new photo’s of the band.We also have a page on www.garageband.com that has Mp3’s and reviews of our music on there.I also spend a lot of time on unsigned forums spreading the word,I find that if you’re a good enough band that does enough gigs you can sell enough cd’s and word spreads that way.

Q. In regards to wheeling and dealing, how important do you feel business knowledge is to making it in an industry filled with much heartache?

I think you need at least a small bit of knowledge but it really does get in the way of creating music but u gotta face facts that music is a BUSINESS and if you want to do it you gotta get out there and play and not just sit on your arse expecting Geffen records to come down to your rehearsal space when you haven’t even done a gigJ

Q. Let's fast forward to 5 years from now. What advice would you offer to struggling independent artists?

Work as a team, share the workload cuz if you’ve got people in the band that are lazy then why are they in your band? You may desperately want it but if others really can’t be bothered then they are going to hold you back.Find band members on the same wavelength. It is really hard to find that and if you do then it’s only the quality of your music that can hold you back.

Q. Most successful artists are involved in charitable organizations that stand for a cause that hits close to home. In that regard, once you reach success, what charitable cause(s) would you like to be involved in and why?

Me personally I would like to be involved in the awareness of what heroin can do to people.Too many of my favourite musicians have either died or have had ongoing problems with that drug and it just breaks my heart why people have to turn to it.Why?Not just my fave muso’s but on the streets its there and I just think wasn’t Trainspotting a good enough example of not to do that shite?!Obviously not because it still here.So yeah I would like to be involved with a charity that helped addicts on junk.

Well, we thank you for taking the time to interview with us and certainly wish you the best in your music career endeavors. There you have it ladies and gentlemen, an inside look into the mind of an independent artist struggling to bring their hard work to fruition in an industry where perseverance and thick skin means survival. No one said it would be easy.
