Night Scene: Join the Coalition to Make Brandon Anthony Stay

Published on 9/20/2007
By ELIZABETH WENDT, ehwendt@naplesnews.com
Here's my question for Brandon Anthony: Where have you been all my nightlife?
Answer: He has been around. It's me who has missed him until now.

About five years ago, Anthony was playing at Paddy Murphy's Irish Pub, then Corks Steakhouse, both on Fifth Avenue South in downtown Naples. Then he departed to San Diego, and made his way back to Naples this season to spin his wonderful web of coffeehouse sound.

"If this takes off, I might stay for awhile," he says of his return to Naples. "I'm a traveling writer."

OK, then, let us all form the Coalition to Make Brandon Anthony Stay. If we do, here is what we will gain: Bold and unabashedly passionate music, the most moody, romantic and heady stuff you will find around town.

We will gain original covers and stirring originals. We will gain a voice that channels a bit of Bob Dylan without becoming too much, blending and blurring notes and words — a voice that is unable and unwilling to hide its feeling.

Anthony's partner in all this is W.L., who plays lead guitar while Anthony strums along and sings. Their line-up is heavily fueled by Dave Matthews Band songs, but also U2. British bands Oasis and — get this — the Cure make an appearance, too.

P.M. PATROL

If you go: Brandon Anthony and partner W.L. play at Bistro 821 on Friday and Saturday nights from 9:30 to close. On Wednesdays, they play at the Ridgeport Pub from 10 p.m. to close. On Thursdays, they play at Beau's Island Grill at the Holiday Inn on U.S. 41 North from 6 to 9 p.m.

In the Anthony treatment, these songs are soulful and laden with longing.
Some examples:

On U2's "All I Want is You," when Anthony sings of "all the promises we've made from the cradle to the grave," it feels like more than lip service; promises and pacts do seem to have been made, real and marvelous ones that bear repeating and remembering.

Anthony's spin on Keith Whitley's "You Say Nothing at All," the ultimate ode to understanding the unspoken side of love, doesn't miss any of the meaning of the original, either.

But he erases some of the song's polished ballad flavor, folding it into his vocal style, rendering it rawer and rougher. When he sings "There's a truth in your eyes saying you'll never leave me," the last four words linger in a deep and memorable way.

Anthony's original songs weave in seamlessly with these better-known offerings. They are much of the same intimate fare, more songs of love and bittersweet sentiment with titles such as "Love Struck" and "Tryst."

It is those originals that he hopes fans will ultimately want to see as much as the duo's emotionally searing covers.

He says he has been told he sounds like Dave Matthews, U2's Bono and Sting. Also overheard at a recent Anthony performance: "He's awesome. He sounds like Ben Harper."

These comparisons are not entirely accurate. Even as he covers those singer's songs, Anthony makes their songs uniquely his, too, stealing instead of borrowing.

"We want to be known as an original act as much as possible," Anthony says. "That's big mold-breaking in this town."

Anthony is currently working on his second album, "Fighter Pilots and Beauty Queens." He describes his sound as alt-country-rock; that is, really nothing in particular, but "sporadic" and "schizophrenic."

Anthony says he is also working on another project: Through his music, trying to spread some big-city Manhattan and/or Seattle sound around Naples.

Oh, Brandon Anthony. Where have you been all our nightlife?
