Q. At what age did you realize you wanted to become a music artist and why?
When I was 13 I realised that I had a singing voice and songwriting skills. I wrote my first song in 5 mins and everybody that heard it loved it. I use to watch B.E.T around that time and I knew it was something I could do.
Q. Most music artists have that special someone or thing that influenced their decision to do music. Did anyone or something in your life play a major role in influencing you to go into the music business?
Actually no. There was just a little voice in my head that always told me that I do something really good if I do after I discovered my musical talent.
Q. In terms of the music, which major artist(s) influenced your style and why?
Well, I can't really say because I think that I have adopted my own style. But in earlier days Ashanti really made a big impression on me because the mood and concepts of her music, especially her first album, felt so right, so convincing and it felt like that's how R&B should really sound like.
Q. With so many independent artists trying to make it, what makes you stand out from the competition?
The fact that of all the music I've heard so far, wheteher I loved it or not, I've never anything that songs like something I would sing or something I would write. Nothing that I've heard so far sounds like "Oh my God that's definitely me!"
Q. Music industry professionals are quick to say that being an artist means to gracefully fit a marketable niche in the industry. If you were offered an opportunity that asked you to be something you are not, would you do it to get your foot in the door?
If they saw who I am as an artist and were interested in me but felt that they needed to change who I am, why were they interested in the first place?
Q. Making music is one thing, selling it is another. What types of strategies do you use in promoting your artistic work and getting it heard by the proper professionals?
You can do so much and no more. Sometimes you just need to let the song carry itself. If a song is a good song you shouldn't need so many strategies. Getting my music heard by professionals isn't the main thing on my mind right now.
Q. In regards to wheeling and dealing, how important do you feel business knowledge is to making it in an industry filled with much heartache?
Oh my God! That's almost all it's about. It's always business first, talent last! My business knowledge is very important to me!
Q. Let's fast forward to 5 years from now. What advice would you offer to struggling independent artists?
Only work with people that are serious and have professionaly planned. Listen, don't be selfish when making music and educate yourself on the market and the business.
Q. Most successful artists are involved in charitable organizations that stand for a cause that hits close to home. In that regard, once you reach success, what charitable cause(s) would you like to be involved in and why?
I hate to see people on the streets and I'm thinking of taking care of the homless and building a rehab centre and building a foundation for kids who are medically challenged.
Well, we thank you for taking the time to interview with us and certainly wish you the best in your music career endeavors. There you have it ladies and gentlemen, an inside look into the mind of an independent artist struggling to bring their hard work to fruition in an industry where perseverance and thick skin means survival. No one said it would be easy.
