The name of the band was chosen by Carl Newman, who has said that he came up with it after watching a Japanese film called The Pornographers .cite news | last = Handler | first = Shane | title = The New Pornographers: Canadian Blockbuster | publisher = Glide Magazine | date = 2005-11-01 | url = http://www.glidemagazine.com/Articles/47784/The-New-Pornographers:-Canadian-Blockbuster.html | accessdate = 2007-09-27 Many writers have assumed that the name was a reference to Jimmy Swaggart 's reputed claim that rock and roll was "the new pornography ."cite web|url= http://www.trouserpress.com/entry.php? a=new_pornographers |title=New Pornographers bio from |publisher=TrouserPress.com |date= |accessdate=2009-07-25 The band has released five albums to date: Mass Romantic (2000), Electric Version (2003), Twin Cinema (2005), Challengers (album)|Challengers (2007), and Together (The New Pornographers album)|Together (2010).
