Clarke started the band on a bet from a promoter at New York City|New York City's Pyramid Club , after a solo performance art show called "Kory Clarke/Warrior Soul". Clarke boasted he would have the best rock band in the city within six months. Nine months later he signed to Geffen Records for a million dollarsciteneeded|date=April 2012. Geffen directed Clarke to shed his hired band and get new players. Clarke insisted on keeping Pete McClanahan as his bass player, and recruited guitarists John Ricco and Gene "XFactor" Poole, drummer Mark Evans, and Peter Jay.

History


The band began playing in New York City in 1987. Clarke says many of their songs are politically based, such as "Blown Away", "Superpower Dreamland", "In Conclusion", and "Children of the Winter." http://www.famousinterview.ca/interviews/warrior_soul.htm Interview with Kory Clarke Clarke describes the band's sound as acid rock|"acid punk" , particularly their Space Age Playboys album.

Despite recognition by peers, including Lars Ulrich from Metallica , who had been quoted as saying Space Age Playboys was his favorite album, Warrior Soul disbanded in 1995.

In 1996, Odds & Ends was released as a collection of demos recorded on an multitrack recording|eight-track with XFactor, and leftover material that was originally intended for release on Elektra Records . Clarke took two years off after the band's breakup and release of Space Age Playboys , and moved back to New York, where he wrote and released a spoken word solo album, Opium Hotel on Cargo Records in 2004. Soon after, Clarke was asked to be the lead singer of Dirty Rig . He coproduced their 2006 album Rock Did It .

All the Warrior Soul albums were re-released in 2006. Their latest is called Destroy The War Machine , released March 2010.

Clarke was asked to be the frontman for the Chicago doom metal band Trouble (band)|Trouble , and began touring in the summer of 2008. Kerrang! magazine reviewed the show as KKKKK (5 Ks)Citation needed|date=January 2010.

December 2008 saw the band return to large indoor stages, with shows at the Shepherds Bush Empire , London, and the O2 Academy Glasgow .

In 2009, the band's re-issued their work on vinyl, and embarked on a European tour to support the release of Destroy the War Machine . Warrior Soul toured the UK with thrash metal band The More I See .
