Album Summary
Internationally acclaimed classical guitarist Xuefei Yang turns her considerable talents and unique style to baroque music for the first time in her recording career. Bach's music has long been championed by guitarists, and this collection of new arrangements of some of his most popular repertoire is perfect for strong radio rotation. This exciting and innovative album in which she has transcribed for the guitar some of Bach's familiar violin concertos and other works showcases why Xuefei Yang is truly a talented artist. Accompanying Fei on this release is the Elias String Quartet.
XueFei has an exclusive international recording contract with EMI Classics. Her EMI debut album Romance de Amor achieved gold disc status in Hong Kong, & her second 40 Degrees North, featuring music from Spain and China was chosen as "Best Instrumental CD of 2008" by Canton Radio station in China, and Editor's Choice in Gramophone Magazine. Fei's third CD, Rodrigo: Concerto de Aranjuez, for EMI was recorded with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and released in 2010. This February, Fei will embark on a six city US tour including New York where she will make her Carnegie Hall debut. She is set to perform works by Albeniz and Rodrigo as well as selections from this latest release.
Guitarist Xuefei Yang's third recording for EMI Classics features two works with orchestra: Joaquin Rodrigo's beloved Concierto de Aranjuez and the world premiere of a newly-composed concerto by Stephen Goss, coupled with solo works by Albeniz and Rodrigo. Recorded in Barcelona with the the Orquestra Simfonica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC) conducted by Eiji Oue.
Si Ji in Chinese is Four Seasons. We have chosen it to be the title of this 'China' inspired album. I hope this disc will leave you with an image of variety and diversity of colors, like the four seasons. As a musician, I feel a responsibility to communicate between different cultures and people through my music. As an artist from China, I would like to infuse the culture of my country in my music. As a guitarist, I hope to make a small contribution towards expanding the guitar repertoire, exploring new possibilities and enriching the techniques for the instrument. The guitar originated in the Middle East, halfway between China and the West. Chinese culture is refined, poetic, expressive and adaptable, like Chinese painting. These virtues can be usefully applied to the guitar. I was struck by the possibilities of the instrument after recording this CD - how ideas from the east have helped in exploring and enriching what is essentially western music. I make music from my heart as always, and I hope that you will respond in a similar way. - Xuefei Yang
